Our Model
At the Malini Foundation we believe that true social and economic change arises from the grassroots. That said, we recognize that to be effective we have to manage the complex interplay between how we operate locally and how we influence advocacy for girls and women globally.
We believe that a combination of a strategic approach and an acute awareness of the local culture and societal norms, as well as collaboration with like-minded organizations and individuals and advocacy are needed to successfully impact change.

Our socio-ecological framework for change helps the Malini Foundation navigate across multiple environments working on a continuum to meet a singular goal.
- Individual: Understanding the knowledge, attitudes and skillsets of particularly influential people in a region as well as social networks such as family members and friends, helps facilitate individual behavior change.
- Community: Rather than “solving” problems for a community, the Malini Foundation has adopted a participatory approach to development, giving women the decision-making tools to become agents of change. We enable women to build solidarity, confidence and to problem-solve in order to improve their own lives. Women working together hold the key to their own empowerment!
- Organizational: At the Malini Foundation, we take a strategic approach to running our organization. We apply key management concepts that may be more typical to the for-profit environment but we believe are crucial to our sustainable operations. Our decision-making is evidence-based and analytical with a focus on ongoing performance improvement and we often depend on subject-matter-experts for guidance.
- Industry: The Malini Foundation’s goal is to maximize synergies within and between professional industries. We have developed a network of partnerships, which are strategic relationships with corporations, other non-profits, schools, universities and individuals.

Many of our partners support our administrative needs and allow us to develop impactful and unique programs building upon existing expertise without reinventing the wheel. In this way, we are able to dedicate 100% of ALL public donations to our programs on the ground. Learn more about our Partners.
- Public Policy: The Malini Foundation raises awareness about the rights, health and empowerment of girls and women in Sri Lanka. We aspire to use our experience and stories from the grassroots to support advocacy efforts and influence the international policy agenda for girls and women.
